Founded

1801

De Inspectie bestaat sinds de oprichting van het onderwijsstelsel in 1801 (onderwijswet-Van der Palm). Formeel dienstonderdeel binnen OCW sinds de fusie van verschillende sector-inspecties in 2007 (Wet op het onderwijstoezicht).

De Inspectie van het Onderwijs (IvhO) houdt toezicht op de kwaliteit van het Nederlandse onderwijs, van primair tot hoger onderwijs. Kernactiviteiten: vierjaarlijkse schoolbezoeken, risico-gericht toezicht, thematisch onderzoek (bv. kansengelijkheid, leesvaardigheid), jaarlijks De Staat van het Onderwijs. Bevoegdheden: aanwijzingsbesluiten, onderzoek op locatie, en in uitzonderlijke gevallen bekostigingsinhouding. Circa 450 FTE, hoofdkantoor in Utrecht.
