De AFM is op 1 maart 2002 ontstaan door naamswijziging van de Stichting Toezicht Effectenverkeer (STE, 1989). Het ZBO houdt gedragstoezicht op de financiële markten, waaronder banken, verzekeraars, beleggingsinstellingen en accountantsorganisaties.

De Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) is de gedragstoezichthouder op de Nederlandse financiële markten en ziet toe op beleggingsondernemingen, vermogensbeheerders, banken, hypotheekverstrekkers, verzekeraars, accountants en beurshandel. De AFM beoordeelt prospectussen, handhaaft MiFID II, de Wft en marktmisbruikregels, en werkt samen met ESMA en DNB. Financiering gebeurt grotendeels via heffingen bij de sector.
