2005
De NVAO werd op 1 februari 2005 opgericht bij het Verdrag tussen Nederland en Vlaanderen van 2003. Het binationale ZBO beoordeelt en accrediteert de kwaliteit van hoger onderwijs in Nederland en Vlaanderen.

De Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie (NVAO) accrediteert opleidingen in het hoger onderwijs in Nederland en Vlaanderen, inclusief bachelor-, master- en Associate degree-opleidingen. Het verdragsorgaan toetst kwaliteit op basis van peer review door visitatiepanels en is wettelijke voorwaarde voor erkende diploma's en studiefinanciering. Het bureau in Den Haag werkt voor OCW en de Vlaamse overheid.
