IBKI is in 1947 opgericht als innovatiecentrum en examenorganisatie voor de mobiliteitsbranche. De stichting is ZBO voor onder meer de APK-keurmeesterexaminering en tachograaftechnicusexamens.

Stichting IBKI is het ZBO dat wettelijke examens afneemt voor de mobiliteitsbranche, waaronder de APK-keurmeesterexamens, tachograaftechnicusexamens, LPG- en elektrotechniek-examens. Daarnaast organiseert IBKI beroepsexamens voor autotechnici en motorvoertuigenbranche en reikt zij erkenningen uit. IBKI werkt vanuit Nieuwegein onder toezicht van IenW en de RDW.
