Invoer- en uitvoercontrole, accijns, drugssmokkel-bestrijding in havens en luchthavens. Circa 5.000 FTE. Werd in 2020 organisatorisch losgetrokken van de Belastingdienst maar blijft binnen Financiën.

Founded
1805

De Nederlandse Douane is een van de oudste overheidsorganisaties — haar moderne vorm stamt uit de Franse tijd (1805) maar haar wortels gaan terug tot de middeleeuwse tolheffing. Vanaf 1993 (interne markt EU) verdween de douane aan binnen-EU-grenzen en verschoof de focus naar de EU-buitengrens. In 2020 organisatorisch verzelfstandigd binnen Financiën met eigen DG, los van de kern-Belastingdienst.

/ 04 — About the organisation
De Douane controleert het fysieke goederenverkeer aan de EU-buitengrenzen, heft invoerrechten en accijnzen (alcohol, tabak, minerale oliën), en handhaaft een brede portefeuille van niet-fiscale regelgeving: sancties, drugs- en wapensmokkel, namaakproducten, CITES-beschermde soorten, voedselveiligheid, en afvaltransport. Operationele focus ligt in de havens van Rotterdam (grootste container-douane van Europa) en op Schiphol. Ruim 5.500 FTE en een sterk uniformeerde cultuur vergelijkbaar met politie of marechaussee.
